By
walking around town, you can see the many historical buildings, reminders of
Scigliano’s admirable pas
t.
Let’s
take an imaginary walk among these buildings: We’ll start in Carmine Golia
Square (Calvisi) and then go up November IV Street.
glimpse
of an old balcony high on the left side.
Records
show that it belonges to the time of the Aragonese Dominion.
Our
relaxing stroll tken leads us to Saint Nicholas Square, which is surrounded by
more buildings on the left aod by the Church of Saint Nicholas on the right.
Let’s go on: passing by the train station, we reach ”Marullo” in the
hamlet of Diano
.
If
you take a look around, you can easily spot many old buildings.
Each
November on the saint’s feast day, the family who owns the church (and had it
built for devotional purposes) has a mass celebrated.
As
we walk away from Marullo, we reach the neighborhood of
”Petriciallu” and from here we can take a downhill stroll to the
Convent of the Capuchin Friars, also known as the Church of Saint Anthony.
It was built in 1587 and is now being refurbished.
The Convent has a
beautiful eloister and an impressive library containing texts from as far back
as 1600.
We
reach Saint Joseph’s Church by continuing downhill.
The
closer we get, the more we see of the church’s impressive bell tower, which
stores an old clock that has recently been repaired.
The
clock’s structure is composed of a large and a small bell, which combine their
movements and ring every 15 minutes, providing the town with the exact time for
hundreds of years.
The
large bell, with its hollow sound, strikes the hour, while the small bell’s
sharper sound strikes the quarter hour.
By
proceding downwards, we get to Saint Joseph Square where a tired
visitor
may relax under a gigantic, old chestnut tree and admire the faqade of the
church.
If you
turn to the opposite direction, you can gaze at the green valley and catch a
glimpse of the sea.
Remember to pay attention to the many details scattered around town as you
leisurely stroll by, for instance, the balcony decorations which adorn the main
square.
This
imaginary walk surely will have aroused your curiosity, so come and discover the
rest!
